A new front tool that maximises the tillage intensity of Carrier XT and Carrier XL

Väderstad, one of the world’s leading companies in tillage, seeding, and planting, introduces a new front tool option for the disc cultivators Carrier XT 425–625 and Carrier XL 425–725: the third disc axle. This development marks a significant step forward in ultra-shallow tillage and mechanical weed control - especially in the fight against herbicide-resistant weeds such as blackgrass.
The new third disc axle configuration, available for Carrier XL 425–725 and Carrier XT 425–625, increases disc density from two rows to three, reducing the disc spacing to just 8.3cm. This results in 50% more tools in the ground, delivering highly intensive mixing, crumbling, and residue management.
- With three rows of CrossCutter Discs, we’re not just improving the work result—we’re redefining what ultra-shallow tillage can achieve, says Wolfram Hastolz, Commercial Manager Tillage, at Väderstad.
The machines deliver high weed-killing rates, preserve soil moisture, and reduce fuel consumption - making them a good option for both conventional- and organic farming systems.
- This new front tool for Carrier XT and Carrier XL is a game-changer for mechanical weed control, especially against herbicide-resistant blackgrass and ryegrass, says Wolfram Hastolz.
Field tests have shown that the new front tool is able to create a stronger stale seedbed, promote weed germination and enable effective elimination in a second pass. This approach supports sustainable farming practices by reducing the need for chemical herbicides, such as glyphosate.
- We’ve designed the third disc axle front tool to deliver higher intensity, better mixing, and strong emergence of weeds and leftover seeds. All while preserving soil moisture and structure, says Wolfram Hastolz.
The third disc axle holds the standard Carrier disc arms, able to be fitted with either the CrossCutter Disc, CrossCutter Disc Aggressive, 450mm disc or 470 TrueCut discs. This opens possibilities for the farmer to equip the machine, to match a wide range of farming conditions.
The new third disc axle will be available as a front tool for Carrier XT 425-625 as well as Carrier XL 425-725 from October 2025, with deliveries starting in the spring 2026. The machines will premiere at Agritechnica 2025.
