Väderstad direct seed drill Seed Hawk represents the latest technology for direct drilling. Seed placement is the secret, with the unique coulter arm giving perfect contouring and placing seed and fertiliser optimally with adjustable pressure on the go, maintaining drilling depth even in very difficult conditions. Seed Hawk works at 25 cm row spacing and can drill most crops, from small-seeded types to cereals and maize. 

Direct drilling with Seed Hawk gives fast and cost-effective establishment and very uniform emergence of the crop.

Unique coulter arm

The strong, individually mounted coulters arms can rebound back by up to 40 cm, allowing perfect contouring. The length of the coulter arms and the short distance between the coulters and the press wheels gives very good seed placement. Since the drilling depth is always kept constant, every seed is given the same conditions for germination, irrespective of the state of the soil surface. This results in unbeatably uniform germination, which is the hallmark of a Seed Hawk-drilled field.

Tine and point create the ultimate conditions

The direct seed drill Seed Hawk has ultra-narrow tines with a flat face that create fine soil and generate cracks in the walls of the seed furrow. This fine soil gives the seeds very good contact with the soil and the cracks act as channels for plant roots, water and oxygen. When drilling in heavy soils in wet conditions, the fine soil prevents the seed furrow from cracking out in dry periods. The advantage with tines is that the seed furrow is also kept free from straw.

The fertilizer is place on a moist seedbed which enables the fertilizer to dissolve quickly and become available to the plant directly. The soil flow from the seed coulters covers the fertilizer and the narrow seed knife places the seed to the side of the fertilizer. This separation is important in preventing the fertilizer from burning the seed. The result is very exact seed placement, with every seed being given optimal conditions for germination and emergence.

The fertilizer coulters are made of soil-seeking double bars protected by hard metal plates. This considerably increases tine life and also ensures that the drilling depth is kept constant.

Easy to adjust coulter pressure

The pressure on each coulter arm is regulated by a hydraulic cylinder that is conveniently controlled from the cab. With a coulter pressure of up to 150 kg and the soil-seeking seed coulters, even dry, heavy soils can be direct drilled. Each coulter arm holds a seed coulter and a fertiliser coulter. The drilling depth can be set easily with the help of Quick Pin. The depth relationship between seed and fertiliser can be adjusted by altering the working depth of the fertiliser coulters. Alternatively, seed can be drilled by both coulters by setting them to the same working depth, creating a narrower row spacing of 21 cm.

The very powerful coulter construction with few moving parts to break down and the completely maintenance-free coulter arm lead to easy maintenance and free up time for drilling.

Reconsolidation Seed Hawk


Reconsolidation on every coulter arm

The seed and fertiliser coulters are followed by press wheels which close the furrow and reconsolidate the seed row, ensuring good contact between soil and seed. Loss of soil moisture is limited at the same time as warming of the soil is benefited - a guarantee for rapid emergence in both dry and cold conditions. Since the press wheel is close to both the seed- and fertilizer coulters the reconsolidation is maintained even during turns.

Thanks to the coulter arm with individually integrated packer wheel the seed and fertilizer is placed in a furrow with the optimum position for access to fertilizer and moisture. The narrow coulter keeps the seed slot free of straw, which reduces the disease pressure. At the same time, the stubble between the rows and the mini soil ridges alongside rows create a favourable microclimate and allow the plants to utilise soil moisture and rainfall in an efficient way.

Cost-effective establishment

Total establishment time is considerably shorter with direct drilling than when the soil has to be ploughed and/or cultivated before drilling. This is very important in calculations showing fuel consumption and working time. Direct drilling also provides better possibilities to exploit timeliness effects.

Fewer machines and lower draught requirement

Direct drilling requires less machines to handle all elements of establishment. Another advantage of Seed Hawk is the low draught requirement, with 25 hp per metre working width being quite sufficient. Fuel consumption is 4-6 litres per hectare, which speaks for itself.

Seed Hawk 30-series - high class metering

The Fenix II metering system is completely corrosion-proof and well designed for metering both seed and fertiliser. The flexible Fenix rubber metering roller has the great advantage of being gentle on seed and therefore the seed rate can be lowered, since there are almost no damaged seeds. The system has a low and a high gear to choose between depending on seed size.

GPS-controlled metering

A GPS unit ensures that the speed signals sent to the Fenix metering system are always perfect. Each seed row can be monitored individually with an electronic seed monitoring system, which sends an immediate alarm when the seed flow declines, so there is no risk of drilling with blocked seed coulters. With half-machine shut-off from the cab as standard on larger models, seed can be saved on wedge-shaped areas and harmful double-drilling can be minimised.

The hopper holds 3900 litres and can be split in 1925 litres for seed and 1975 litres for fertilizer. Access is excellent due to a large opening and the top can be opened from the ground in order to save time.

The hopper is provided with lighting so that it is easy to see how much seed and fertiliser are left when it gets dark.

Seed Hawk 45 series - flexible in the field

The direct seed drill Seed Hawk has a robust frame with four axles. The frame is kept at a fixed height above the soil surface with the help of four support wheels. This high soil clearance and the placement of the coulter arms on four axles ensures high throughflow of harvest residues.

In areas that receive low amounts of rainfall or in areas with an increasingly variable climate, direct drilling into stubble is often the method that gives the best long-term sustainability and the best economy.

Leaving the stubble in place and not tilling the soil helps to retain essential soil moisture, giving the new crop an outstanding start.

The Seed Hawk concept

Seed Hawk works with fixed frame height and contour following openers. Three or four rows of coulters offer enough space for trash and straw residues to pass through. Seed Hawk has an amazing ability to follow ground contour, which is important especially when the machine width is wider. Moreover no till direct seeding is done on uncultivated fields that sometimes can be unlevelled.

The patented seed coulter is the secret behind the superior seed and fertiliser placement of Seed Hawk drills. One fertiliser knife and one seed knife are placed on a long coulter arm to give a calm and even operation.

The ultra-narrow and aggressive fertiliser knives cut a slot where the fertiliser is placed. The fertiliser depth can be adjusted and fertiliser is normally placed approx. 20 mm below the seed. The narrow seed knife places the seed 35 mm to the side of the fertiliser. This separation is important in preventing the fertiliser from burning the seed. A press wheel controls the depth of the fertiliser and the seed knife. The press wheel will close the seed furrow and ensure a good seed to soil contact. The depth can easily be adjusted using the Quick Pin setting.

The fertiliser knife has a trip mechanism allowing it to fold back when hitting a stone - without affecting the seeding depth of the seed knife.

The knives create enough fine soil for the seed to have good contact with the surrounding soil and to build a little wall of soil on each side of the seed slit. This wall directs any subsequent rainfall towards the seed.

The result is precise seed placement where every seed has optimum conditions for germination. The knife keeps the seed furrow completely clean and no straw comes into contact with the seed. The neighbouring stubble and soil walls that surround each seed furrow create an excellent microclimate where plants can efficiently utilise existing soil moisture and any subsequent rain.

No-till establishment means that no soil tillage is carried out. This means that grass and volunteer seeds in the soil are never encouraged to germinate. Stubble is kept as a protective cover to create a good microclimate during emergence.

No-Till improves the soil structure. All tillage and cultivation change the soil from its natural structure. By keeping the residues on top the soil can carry more traffic, is more capable of handling severe rain or drought and the nutrients from the decomposition are quickly available for the emerging new plants.

Moreover the few passes over the field minimize the risk of soil compaction.

Collects water

Stubble has another important function to retain water. Especially in inland climate regions, where moisture is limited, keeping the moisture is the most important factor deciding the yield potential. Leaving undisturbed stubble in place means that in warm regions the stubble will shade the emerging plant. And in cold areas snow can be retained by the stubble during the winter and become meltwater in the spring. Keeping a plant cover on the soil all year round also decreases the risk of soil erosion.

Combi drill

When drilling directly into stubble it is often an advantage to combi drill – especially in spring. Nitrogen is made available to the plant directly, which gives strong establishment, even if rainfall is lacking. Nitrogen supply can also be distributed over time by using a slow-release fertiliser. Drilling fertiliser and seed together saves one pass, which decreases the compaction. The time and cost of a separate fertilizer pass are also saved.

No-till drilling more demanding

While no-till drilling is the simplest crop establishment technique, it also demands most of the farmer. A good crop rotation and straw management are essential for success. Good soil structure with no compaction damage and a fairly level surface are other factors required. For the farmer who has these, direct drilling can produce good yields at the lowest possible establishment cost.
